| [ Robert Newton Ford ] |
On April 3rd, 1882 a relatively unknown name was propelled into history as the killer of the legendary train/bank robber Jesse James; and that name was none other than: Robert Ford. He did something he never thought possible, he had dreamed from a young age of meeting Jesse James but he never, ever had it in his mind that he'd be held accountable for the murder of such a great man. Before all this nonsense, Robert Ford was born to James Thomas Ford and his wife Mary Bruin on January 31, 1862 in Ray County, Missouri. He is the youngest of three Ford boys, his eldest brother being the key link between him and Jesse. At a very young age, he became an avid admirer of Jesse James for his war record and his daring robbery career. He found himself in love with the idea of meeting Jesse, staying up late at night reading of the crimes Jesse and the Younger gang committed across Missouri. In the year 1879, Robert managed to meet the Jameses at a gambling night with help of his brother Charley Ford. In 1881, Jesse James moved his family to St. Joseph, Missouri; he had intended to giv eup crime but wanted to stange one last robbery before retiring. James had invted Charley and Robert Ford to take part in a robbery that never happened, allowing the Ford boys to move into his home and claim they were his cousins, though they were unrelated. Charley Ford is believed to have taken part in the James gang's Blue Cut train robbery near Glendale, Missouri on September 7, 1881; along with Robert Ford. Robert had convinced Jesse to let him be apart of the robbery with his wide knowledge of the James gang. Wearing a white bag with holes cut out for his eyes, he was very much an amateur, considering he had the nerve to tell Jesse not to kill someone. After the robbery of the Blue Cut train, Robert stayed behind to help Jesse move from his current home to another in town during the night so that the town couldn't get a good look at their belongings. Robert spent a good amount of time at the James residence but was soon sent away to go to his sisters rented ranch in Blue Mills, which she rented in 1879 after becoming widowed. That same year of the Jesse James' murder, Robert Ford murdered Wood Hite. Wood Hite was the cousin of Jesse James, and was in such a rage he was about to shoot Dick Liddil. The killing of Wood led to Ford's arrest where he made a deal with Governor Thomas T. Crittenden; he would be pardoned for the murder of Hite if he were to capture or kill James. Robert, Charley and Jesse ate breakfast on the morning of April 3rd, 1882 when Jesse found out about Dick Liddils arrest. He found Robert's mannerisms very odd, but excused them from the table anyhow. Charley and Robert moved into the livingroom, soon to be followed by Jesse, who after a long while, ditched his guns and noted how dusty a picture was. Pulling a chair over, Jesse began to dust the frame and Robert took advantage, shooting Jesse in the back of the head. Robert Ford wired the governor to claim his reward. He then turned himself in to the law, but was dismayed to find he was charged with first degree murder. The Ford brothers were tried and convicted. They were sentenced to death by hanging, but within two hours were granted a full pardon by the Governor of Missouri. Ford then received a portion of the reward money. Bob Ford earned his living by posing for photographs as "the man who killed Jesse James" in dime museums. He also appeared on stage, reenacting his killing of Jesse James, but his performance was not well received. Prompt Responses » Prompt responses are based random points in time in Robert Ford's life. From Childhood to Meeting Jesse James for the first time to Killing Jesse James and so on and so forth. I will most likely tag each prompt respectively. Robert Ford is based off his historical canon, as well as the Academy Award winning motion picture 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford', along with the book written by Ron Hansen. Also, there might be some fudging done by the writer in this journal.. The Communities » + + Links » + Voicemail/Contact + Community Posts + Historical Wiki + Legend Info + Fandom Wiki ![]() |
